Transfer to BYU from a U.S. School
Transfer Your SEVIS Record to a New School
You must personally request and authorize your SEVIS record be transferred to your new school in order to maintain your F-1 status.
Eligibility
- Admittance to another school
- Current maintenance of your lawful status, including
- Enrollment in a full course of study OR
- Participation in optional practical training
NOTE: If you are out of status and ineligible to transfer to your new school, you must do one of the following:
- Apply to USCIS for reinstatement OR
- Leave the country and renter with an initial Form I-20 from your new school
Procedure
- After being accepted to your new school, you must complete and submit a Transfer Out Request E-Form.
- Upload an official acceptance letter from your new school.
- Your new school will either send or have you submit a form to verify your transfer eligibility from BYU. This can be uploaded through the e-form request.
- Our office will then complete and return the transfer eligibility form for your new school.
- International Student and Scholar Services will transfer your SEVIS record effective the date you designate on your Transfer Out E-Form.
- Your transfer release date will typically be the day you complete your program or the final day of the last semester that you are enrolled at BYU, whichever is latest (unique situations will also be considered).
- If you decide to cancel your school transfer, you must notify International Student and Scholar Services BEFORE your transfer release date. Once the transfer release date has been reached, BYU will no longer have access to your SEVIS record.
- If you are not taking classes or are on your vacation period, you may choose any day before the first semester at your new school to transfer your record.
- If you have completed your previous program and are in your 60-day grace period, you must choose a day before that grace period is over.
Important Information:
- Your employment benefits at BYU terminate on the effective transfer date. This means that once your SEVIS record is transferred, you should not work with any employment authorizations approved through our office (this includes CPT).
- Be sure to enroll in a full course of study during your initial semester or term specified on your new Form I-20 at your new school.
- You DO NOT have to pay the SEVIS fee again.
- Make sure that you check-in with your new school upon your arrival to that campus.
Current School
Please check with your current school to arrange to transfer your SEVIS record to BYU.
BYU
You must request a new initial I-20 from BYU. After your record transfers, we will prepare your new BYU I-20. Please WAIT until you receive an email from our office with the details on how to obtain your initial BYU I-20.
- There will be a place in this initial BYU I-20 request form to show that you are a transfer student.
- Please read through all of the instructions in the email and request form carefully.
